THE NEIGHBOURHOOD   VMA's PRE-SHOW...IT WAS LOVE AT FIRST LIVE...

by CORAL DEL MAR | August 27, 2013

Last Saturday,  MTV VMA hosted the last of five VMA pre-shows with New Politics, The Neighbourhood (NBHD) and Wildcat! Wildcat! at Webster Hall in New York City.

The Neighbourhood (The NBHD) was for me the highlight of the evening. It was the very first time I had ever heard anything about the band or their music. The second I heard the voice of the lead vocalist, Jesse Rutherford along with the overall sound of the band, I was hooked. There is a fusion of so many music styles & genres in their album, titled "I Love You."

(written in symbols of an eye inside a triangle, a heart, and a house upside down)

I admit I was immediately turned into a fan of their music. Their sound is as mesmerizing as it is sensual. Rolling Stones finds their music "moody" & "atmospheric..." even the song "Afraid" was sung with words uttered so elegantly with so much feeling & respect, if there's such a thing. Their performance was phenomenal. One truly feels they bring in all their heart and soul creating a great vibe in the room.

There were both men &  women sitting on top of their friend's shoulders  immersed in the experience and feeling their sound. Jessie's voice is very distinct...there is so much tenderness, strength, and sincerity combined which makes a great contrast while looking at his upper body all covered in tattoos. His body movements were so on key with the vibe of each song & extremely sexy. The band seemed very connected with one another which certainly comes through in their playing and overall performance adding to the experience. The NBHD formed in August of 2011 with guitarist Zach Abels and Jeremy Freedman, bassist Mikey Margot, drummer Bryan Sammis and Jesse Rutherford as their lead vocalist.

I left the venue feeling elated and wanting to learn everything I could about them. I am totally hooked on their music and very excited for their future which to me looks very bright. It has been a while since I had a similar feeling of being wholeheartedly inspired after leaving a concert from a band I knew nothing about prior to attending their show.

Last time this happened to me was in 2000 when I randomly ended in a Coldplay concert at Radio City Music Hall, where each song they unveiled kept me inspired knowing one day they would make it very big. Even though The NHBH sound and music is different than Coldplay's, I feel a similar excitement for the band's future as I did then for Coldplay. Looking forward to following their journey...looks like it is a very promising future ahead of them!
